The Yapper's Digest: September 6, 2024

“What would would you do if when you okay so he said yes would go” - this creator on cold meds and likely Trump talking about child care.

A story that had me like WTF is… honestly not even a story just something that is an “of course” and it’s Politico’s mapping of JD Vance’s inner circle. NOT shockingly, the list has ONE woman on the whole thing. Might explain a few things… or honestly not at all because the man can’t even pick out donuts. Scream. -Maddie

Something that should be on everyone’s radar is… that the IRS can actually do its job effectively because of being actually funded, and therefore has collected $1.3 billion in unpaid taxes from ultra-wealthy earners. Amazing what an agency with the ability to function can do! Tysm Inflation Reduction Act [and Biden!]. -Maddie

Something I’m loving for fall is… obviously all the things we included on this ins/outs list! I’m also loving early voting for fall [in states that have it], ya know it’s just the vibe and the girlies love the vibe. -Maddie

A book I’m adding to my list is… the book written by this week’s podcast guest on ballot initiatives and direct democracy! If you give it a read too, LMK whatcha think. -Maddie

An eppy of the pod people should dive back into is… our epi with Congressman Colin Allred, who has an actual real AF shot at beating Ted Cruz. Like, imagine if we beat Ted Cruz because you shared this epi with a friend that lives in Texas that then shares it with their friend group and so on? Would be ICONIC. -Maddie

One thing I’m manifesting rn is… well, I mean see above – booting Ted Cruz from office. It’s more than manifesting though, it’s called putting in the time to call everyone I know about making it happen. -Maddie

A story that had me like WTF is… one that’s not surprising perhaps, but JD Vance calling school shootings “just a part of the reality we live in.” Like sir, they don’t have to be??? Man is a weirdo and a wimp [and a simp for the gun lobby]. -Sammy

Something that should be on everyone’s radar is… that the race for the US Senate seat in Florida currently held by Rick Scott is getting tight AF, thanks to former Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell putting the pedal to the medal. Her race is critical AF so this is gooooood news – GOOD NEWS. -Sammy

Something I’m loving for fall is… chocolate brown suede. Do I have anything in chocolate brown suede yet? No, but I do have my eye on this tote bag. -Sammy

A book I’m adding to my list is… Brian Tyler Cohen’s new book, which I just got sent to me. It’s called “Shameless: Republicans’ Deliberate Dysfunction and the Battle to Preserve Democracy.” It’s giving “gotcha” but we shall see! -Sammy

An eppy of the pod people should dive back into is… our interview with Will Rollins who is running to flip a Congressional seat in southern California. He’s not only a great candidate IMO, but a total hoot. It’s def a good one to send to a friend just getting into politics. -Sammy

One thing I’m manifesting rn is… that Disco [my niece] and Chip [Maddie’s friends’ dog] fall in love. I’m sorry but it would be SO cute. -Sammy

ON THE POD: CHIPS & BALLOT MEASURES

An interview with Oklahoma State Rep. Mickey Dollens

Ballot measures have become the talk of the town the last few years, and that’s not about to stop any time soon. Their MVP moment is continuing, and Oklahoma State Rep. Mickey Dollen’s new book on how they work as a form of direct democracy gets into all of the deats – oh, and so does this convo with him. We also chat about Oklahoma politics, getting shit done, vending machines, and our favorite chips – which tbh, you should drop your fave chip in the comments of the YouTube, here. For other viewing avenues, tune in via Apple Podcasts & Spotify.

Lil’ things we’re loving

  • Our girlies at Right Answers Mostly Podcast are doing a multi-part, multi-eppy rundown on Kamala Harris – eppy one is out, so like don’t walk, run – or listen to it while you walk/run/sit on the couch, etc.

  • If you listened to this week’s eppy, you’ll know Maddie’s favorite chip is currently this one and Sammy’s is this one.

  • The Thelma and Louise series that Rep. Slotkin and Senator Stabenow are doing as they drive across Michigan campaigning is giving thoughtful meets strategic meets wholesome.

  • This workshop in NY where you can make your own shadow boxes with matches you’ve collected. We’ll be attending ASAP.

ADD TO THE DMS

Makin’ there way from DM to DM

  • It’s fashion week x political icons, aka with First Lady Jilly B and her granddaughter spotted at Ralph Lauren. Obsessed.

  • This JD Vance “for the guys” skit has us howling, loling, and everything else in between.

  • Jenna Bush Hager gave the 411 on what it was like when her parents asked her and her sister about running for president… their reaction was low key priceless.

  • This tidbit of small worldness with Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and Academy Award winner Matt Damon having been in the same drama class is just so wtf in the best way.
